Tank water heaters are selected by first-hour rating and recovery rate, not just nominal gallon capacity. First-hour rating describes how many gallons the unit can deliver starting from a full hot tank, accounting for recovery during the draw period. For a family of four with morning-heavy hot water demand, a 50-gallon unit with a high recovery rate often outperforms a 75-gallon unit with a slower burner. California requires seismic strapping on all water heaters using two approved metal straps, one in the upper third and one in the lower third of the tank, anchored to wall studs or structural blocking. The temperature and pressure relief valve must be rated for the unit’s BTU input and maximum setpoint temperature, and its discharge line must run downward to within six inches of the floor, to a floor drain, or to an exterior discharge point. It cannot terminate into a trap.

Expansion tanks are required on any system with a backflow preventer or pressure-reducing valve at the service entry that creates a closed system. Without a thermal expansion tank, pressure builds in the closed system as water heats and expands, cycling the relief valve and shortening its service life. Tankless water heater installation involves more upfront engineering than a tank replacement.
